If only I knew then what I know now...
I wouldn't have wasted so much money on stuff I barely used. And maybe I could have prevented all those adorable "must haves" for my baby from cluttering the garage in sometimes as little as a few months!

Health Care

Nobody really needs those kits that have 20 different baby items. You'll get the bulb syringe in the hospital after you deliver. The 3 different combs and brushes aren't very useful when your baby is bald. You don't need the medicine syringe because whatever medicine you buy comes with one. And those strips you adhere to the forehead to take the baby's temperature aren't very accurate.
Every household with a baby or child needs a digital thermometer. They're under $10 at most stores and you can use them rectally (don't forget probe covers) or under the arm for a baby, and orally for older kids.
Infant tylenol is the only medicine for babies under 6 months. It's always good to have on hand. You will need it at some point, and if your baby gets a fever at 2am, you'll be happy you thought of getting it ahead of time.
Although it's more of a grooming item, you will need nail clippers. The best one is the standard gerber. It looks like adult clippers but smaller and their fingers are small for the first five years, so it's a great investment.
So instead of buying that big kit, just get the things you'll need. But if you happen to be given one like I was, you can always fill it with the stuff you will need and put it in the car- like some bandaids and wound cleaner for when they fall at the park. It's the perfect size for a travel first aid kit so it can still come in handy.
