I must admit that I love the smells of all those lotions and baby washes as well. But when were talking necessities, I like Johnsons and Johnsons moisturizing baby wash in the pink bottle. It's great for sensitive skin, smells like baby powder, and is inexpensive (so if your older child thinks it's bubble bath and dumps out half the bottle in one bath, you're not so upset). A couple of my kids had dry skin problems at some point and for those time periods I liked Baby Aveeno for sensitive skin.
As for skin care for the diaper area, I like Desitin original cream. I never used it regularly or daily, only if there were signs of a rash. Plus, I always used just a light layer. One tube could last through 2 or 3 kids if you don't over use it, and you'll find that they don't get as many rashes.
